There are several challenges in coating wooden substrates. As wood is a natural material, many different compositions and origins exist. Driven by legislation and furniture manufacturers, the reduction of the VOC level is another major issue. Dr. Rolf Gertzmann of Bayer MaterialScience, BU Coatings, Adhesives and Specialties, summarises current trends and challenges.
