2-(trimethylsilyloxy)-l,3-butadiene reacted with fullerenes via sing-step Diels-Alder reaction to give cyclohexanone containing fullerene mono-adduct, abbreviated as CHOC60 with purity as high as 99% through much more simplified synthesis and purification process compared with PC61BM, as electron acceptor for organic solar cells (OSCs). After easy reduction and esterification, CHOC60 could be further modified into cyclohexyl acetate functionalized fullerene mono-adduct, named as CHAC60 with excellent solubility in common organic solvents, such as chloroform, toluene and 1,2-dichlorobenzene etc. P3HT-based bulkheterojunction photovoltaic devices were fabricated by using CHOC60 and CHAC60 as the electron acceptors through a layered structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:acceptor/Ca/Al. Composite ratios of P3HT and the fullerene derivatives were varied such as 1:0.5, 1:1 and 1:1.5. The device performances of these OSCs are determined by the open-circuit voltage (Voc), short-circuit current density (Jsc), and fill factor (FF). After optimization, the highest PCE of the devices fabricated using CHOC60 and CHAC60 were 2.97% and 3.15%, respectively, which significantly reduced the manufacturing cost by consuming much less fullerene acceptor and exhibited comparative photovoltaic performances with PC61BM.
