Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were functionalized to improve the dispersion in paraffin oil as additive. The tribological behavior of bismaleimide resin lubricated with the functionalized carbon nanotubes as additive in paraffin oil were investigated by friction and wear tester. The wear surface of the resin with steel ball as tribopair was analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the addition of this kind of functionalized MWCNTs can efficiently decrease the friction coefficient. An optimal additive concentration exists in the system and is found to be 0.025wt%. A lubrication model for the resin and steel ball system is advanced and it is the isolating effect and bearing structure of f-MWCNTs that plays key part in friction and wear reduction.
