Solarenergyexploration(capture,conversion,andstorage)hasbecomeamuch-debatedtopic.Astheworlddemandforenergycontinuestoincreaseatanunprecedentedpace,solarenergywilleventuallyentertheconsumermarket.Solarconcentratorsprovideacriticalplatformforhighefficiencyphotovoltaicenergyconversion,especiallyifcombinedwithmulti-junctionphotovoltaiccells.Howeveroneofthekeyelementstosuccessfulimplementationofthistechnologyliesinidentifyinganaffordableopticalmanufacturingprocess.Inthisresearch,weproposeamanufacturingprocessbasedonthermalslumpingofsodalimesheetglass(windowglass)asthemainopticforsolarcells.Alabscalehightemperaturefurnacewasutilizedtoheattheglassthatwassupportedbyaceramicmold.Theslumpingprocesswascarefullymodeledusingacommercialfiniteelementsoftwareandthepropercompensationforthermalshrinkageoftheglassopticswascalculatedsothatthemoldcouldbemodifiedpriortoconductingtheslumpingexperiments.Thefigureandsurfacefinishoftheconcentratoropticswereevaluatedusingcoordinatemeasuringmachineandatomicforcemicroscope.Furthermore,theopticalperformanceoftheformedconcentratorswasevaluatedusinganopticalsetup.Theresearchdemonstratedauniquehighvolume,lowcostmanufacturingprocessforsolarconcentrators.Themethodologydevelopedinthisresearchcanbereadilyadaptedtoworkingwithotherengineeringmaterials,suchaspolymerswithappropriateadjustmentstotheprocessparameters.Futureworkwouldincludesystemsstudyusingselectedhighefficiency,multi-junctionphotovoltaiccells.
