Anovelprogresswasusedtopreparenon-drippinghalogen-freefireretardantpolyethyleneterephthalateinthispaper.Anoligomer,2-carboxyethyl(phenylphosphinic)acid(CEPPA),wasusedasanovelflameretardant.Organicmontmorillonitewasusedasacollaborativeflameretardant.ThethermalbehaviourandflammabilityofPETfiberspreparedbyin-suitpolymerizationwith2-carboxyethyl(phenylphosphinic)acidandorganicmontmorillonite,wereinvestigatedbythermogravimetricanalysis(TGA)andLOItest.TheLOItestshowsthatLOIwasimprovedandthemeltingdripping,duringthecombustionprocesswasreducedfromflameretardantPET(FR-PET)fibers.TheseresultsindicatedthatCEPPAisaneffectiveflame-retardantforPET.ThephosphoruscontentofFR-PETwasdetectedbyelementalanalysis.SEMgraphsoftheresidueoftheFR-PETshowthatthestructureofthecharsyieldedduringthedecompositionismorecompactandthickthanpurePET.
