Biobasedpolymerproductsderivedfromannuallyrenewableagriculturalandbiomassfeedstockhavebecomeincreasinglyimportantassustainableandeco-efficientproductswhichcanreplacetheproductsbasedexclusivelyonpetroleumfeedstock.Withinthisframework,theconceptofbiobasedengineeingelastomer(BEE)isproposedanddemonstratedhereasapracticalsolution.Further,large-scaledbiobasedmonomers,suchassebacicacid,itaconicacid,succinateacid,1,3-propanediolandl,4-butanediolwerechosentogeneratethesyntheticBEEmatricesthroughmeltingpolycondensation,whicharelinearandnoncrystallinecopolyesterswithlowglasstransitiontemperature(Tg)andcrosslinkablegroups.ThenanoparticlessuchassilicaandcarbonblackwerethenintroducedintotheBEEmatricestosuccessfullyrealizethegreatstrengtheningandimprovedenvironmentalstability.ChemicalcrosslinksthroughcrosslinkablegroupsofBEEmacromoleculesandcuringagentsuchasperoxideendowedtheBEEwithnecessaryhighelasticity,lowcrystallinityandrequiredenvironmentalstability.TheacquiredBEEdemonstratedexcellentmechanicalproperties,suchasanultimatetensilestrengthof20MPa,goodbiocompatibilityandadvancedcomprehensiveperformance.Inviewofitsnicemechanicalproperties,goodbiocompatibility,aswellasthepossiblecompatibilitywithPLA,BEEwasconsideredtobeagoodcandidatefortougheningofPLA.TheobtainedPLA/BEEcompositesexhibitedsignificantlyimprovedmechanicalpropertiesandtounghnesswhenadding10wt%BEE.OurresearchindicatesthatthesePLA/BEblendsholdgreatpotentialforbothengineeringandbiomedicalapplications.
