LiquidCarbonDioxide(C02)isarecentlydevelopedtechnologythatmaybecomecommerciallyavailable.Liquidcarbondioxidehasbeenusedforcleaninginotherprocessesforseveralyears.Duringtheprocess,clothesareimmersedinliquidC02inanenclosedcylindricalbasket(insideapressurevesselthatisunderpressuresof700t01,000psig).Theloadisthenagitatedinsidethebasketbyhighvelocityfluidjetsormechanicalactiontoremovesoils.Oncethecleaningprocessisfinished,thegarmentsareremovedandneednodrying.ManufacturersindicatethatbecauseliquidC02haslowviscosity,bettercleaningispossiblebecausesmallerparticlescanberemovedfromthesurfacewithlessredeposition.InvestigationoftheliquidC020nthepolymerstextiledosinglaundryprocessandunderstandingthedifficultiesarethecoreobjectivesofthispaper;aswellasdevelopinganoptimummethodforminimizingC02detergentundernormalandsupercriticalconditions,byusingspeciallyconstructedcylindricalviewcellwith20pticalwindowstomonitorandtakephotographsofspecimensduringdifferentstages.Differentpolymers(e.g.styrenemonomer,SM)havebeentestedunderbothnormalandsupercriticalconditions.Effectivenesswasnotobservedwhenthepolymerwasinitiallyatconditionsbelowglasstransitiontemperature(Tg),butwasobservedforinitialconditionsabovetheTg.Itwasalsofoundthatmoreextensiveeffectivenessoccurredathighertemperatures(1000Cversus700C)despitelessC02beingoriginallyabsorbedinthesample.Thiswasattributedtolowerviscositiesandhigherdiffusivitiesatthehighertemperature.
