Graphene,themostrecentlyfoundallotropeofthecarbonfamily,hasprovokedresearchinterestworldwideduetoitsoutstandingelectronic,mechanicalandthermalpropertiescl].Nowadays,afunctionalizedgraphenederivative,grapheneoxide(GO),isavailableinlargequantitiesinaqueoussolutionbyoxidizingnaturalgraphitec2].ThemechanicalpropertiesofGOarecomparabletothoseofgraphene.Besides,GObearsabundantoxygenmoieties,whichfacilitatefurtherchemicalmodificationandcross-linking,e.g.,bymetalioncoordinationc3].IncludingGOindifferentpolymer-matrixnanocompositeshasbeenasubjectofintenseresearchrecently.Forexample,itisfoundthatGOcansignificantlyenhancethemechanicalpropertiesofsuchwater-solublepolymersaspoly(vinylalcohol)(PVA)andpoly(ethyleneoxide)(PEO).Solution-phasephysicalmixingofthefillerandthematrixisusedinthesecases.Toachieveasignificantreinforcingeffect,stronginterfacialbondingbetweenthefillerandthematrixispreferred.ConsideringtheabundantoxygenmoietiesonGOandPVAorPEOwhicharefavorableformetalioncoordination,wereporthereasimple,cost-effectivewaytocreatestrongfiller/matrixinterfacialbondingbyintroducingcopperionsintheirmixedsolution.ThecoordinationbondingbetweenGOandPVAorPEObycopperionsinducescross-linking,whichtranslatesintobettermechanicalpropertiesthanthoseofGO/PVAorPEOnanocompositespreparedbymerephysicalmixingofthetwocomponents.Thiswaymayopenupanewopportunityforhigh-performancepolymer-matrixnanocomposites.
