Theflow-inducedshish-kebabsofpolyolefinshavebeenwelldemonstratedtobehighlybeneficialtomechanicalstrength,toughness,heatresistance,gasbarrier,etc.However,itisstillachallengetoachievenumerousshish-kebabsofbiodegradablepoly(L-lacticacid)(PLLA)duetoitsshortchainlengthandsemi-rigidchainbackbonecomparedtopolyolefinscl].Inthiswork,anovelinjectionmoldingtechnology,namedoscillationshearinjectionmolding(OSIM),wasappliedtoprovideanintenseshearflowonPLLAmeltincavity,inordertoaccelerateshear-inducedcrystallizationofPLLAininjectionmoldedPLLAandPLLA/ramiefiberbio-composites.Numerousofshish-kebabsofPLLAhavebeensuccessfullyachievedininjection-moldedPLLAforthefirsttime[2],andhighresolutionscanningelectronmicroscopyrevealsadiameterofaround0.7ymandalongperiodof一20nmfortheshish-kebabsuperstructure.Moreinterestingly,besidestheformationofclassicshish-kebabs,shearflow-driventranscrystallinity(TC)onramiefibersurfaceandhybridshish-kebabsuperstructureinducedbyramienanofibersweredirectlyachievedinPLLA/ramiefiberbiocompositesbyusingOSIM.Therelationshipbetweenthesenovelsuperstructuresandmechanicalpropertieswasalsoinvestigated.Theresultsshowthatamoderateimprovementofthemechanicalpropertiessuchasthetensilestrengthandstiffnesscanbeobtainedduetothepresenceofshishkebabs.Moreintriguingly,withtheexistenceofTC,hybridshish-kebabsandramiefibers,anoteworthypromotionintensilestrength,stiffnesstensilemodulusandNotchedimpactstrengthisachievedinthebiocomposites,obtainingsubstantialincreaseof一22%,~41%and~120%comparedtotheneatPLLAsamplemoldedbyconventionalinjectionmolding,respectively.Itisbelievedthatfurtherexplorationwillprovidearichfundamentalunderstandingintheshear-inducedcrystallizationandmorphologymanipulationofPLLA,aimingtoachievesuperiorPLLAproductsininjectionmoldingprocess.
