Lobstercuticlepossesseshighstrength,stiffnessandfracturetoughness,whichreliablyprotectslosterbody.Theexcellentmechanicalpropertiesoflobstercuticlearecloselyrelatedtoitselaboratemicrostructuresoptimizedbynatureovermanycenturies.Theresearchesontherelationshipbetweentheelaboratemicrostructuresandtheexcellentmechanicalpropertiesmayprovidebeneficialinformationfordevelopingnewhigh-performanceman-madecomposites.Inthiswork,ascanningelectronmicroscopeisusedfortheobservationofthemicrostructuresofaredlobstercuticle.Theobservationresultshowsthatthecuticleisakindofnaturalfiber-reinforcedbiocomposite,whichconsistsofchitinfibersandsclerousproteinmatrix.Thereareseveralkindsoftheparticularshapesofthefibersatthedifferentlocationsinthecuticle,whichincludeakindofretiformfiber.Thefiberconsistsofamainfiberandmanyinferiorfibersattachedonthemainfiber.BasedontheSEMobservation,theultimatefracturestrengthofthecompositereinforcedwiththeretiformfibersistheoreticallyinvestigatedandcomparedwiththatofthecompositereinforcedwithplainfibers.Itshowsthattheultimatefracturestrengthofthecompositesreinforcedwiththeretiformfibersismarkedlylargerthanthatofthecompositereinforcedwiththeplainfibers.Akindofbiomimeticcompositereinforcedwiththeretiformfibersisalsodesignedandfabricated.Theultimatestrengthofthebiomimeticcompositesistestedandcomparedwiththatofthecompositereinforcedwiththeplainfibers.Thetestresultvalidatesthetheoreticallyanalyticresult.
