Printedwiringboard(PWB)isthekeycomponentintheelectronicitem.Forthesafetyreason,PWBsmaterialsarerequiredtomeetdefinedflameretardancystandardssuchasUL94-VOratingcl].Epoxyresins(EP)arewidelyusedasresinbackboneforPWBbasematerials.Metalphosphinatesareanewclassofflameretardants.Inthepaper,EPcontainingzincmethylethylphosphinate(Zn(MEP》wereprepared.ThestructureofZn(MEP)wasconformedwithFTIR,IHNMR,3IPNMR,XRFandXRD.TheflameretardancyandthermalpropertiesofZn(MEP)/EPwereanalyzedbyalimitingoxygenindex(LOI),UL-94test,TG,FTIR,SEM-EDXaswellasDSC.ActivationenergyforthedecompositionofsamplewasobtainedusingtheKissingerequation.Zn(MEP)isahalogen-freeflameretardantwithacrystallinestructure.Itisathermallystablecompoundbelow4060C.Adding10wt%ofZn(MEP)causestheLOIofEPtoincreasefrom20.1%t026.6%.15一poundunderTi20wt%ofZn(MEP)canprovidesatisfactoryflameretardancy.ThecharobtainedbyheatingisverysmoothandcondensedandrichinP-andC-containingcomponents.Onthesurfaceofthechar,theatomicratioofP/Znisreducedcomparedtooriginalmaterial.Condensedcharlayerturnsouttobeofmostimportancefortheflameretardantperformance.TheP-andC-richcomponentsaswellasloweratomicratioofP/ZnonthecharsurfaceimpliesthattheZn(MEP)actsasbothcondensedphaseandgasphase.AddingZn(MEP)changesthemaindecompositionprocessoftheEPslightly,resultinginareductioninTi,anincreaseindecompositionactivationenergyandcharyield.Inaddition,theTgofEPcompositesisincreasedby200C一280CwithZn(MEP)contentvaryingfrom10wt%t025wt%.Comparingtocommercialproductsuchasaluminumphosphinates,Zn(MEP)haslessnegativeinfluenceontheinitialdecompositiontemperatureofEPandtheinteractionbetweenpolymerandadditivesismoreprominentinZn(MEP)filledEPsystem.Inaddition,Zn(MEP)filledEPshowshigherTgbutlowerLOIandcharforming.
