Polymerdispersedliquidcrystals(PDLCs)havebeeninvestigatedintensivelybecauseoftheirinterestingpropertiesandpotentialapplicationsindisplayandelectro-opticaldevicescl].WhenpreparedPDLCsbyphotopolymerizationinducedphaseseparation(PIPS),thedecreaseinaveragedistancebetweenmonomersduringphotopolymerizationcausestheshrinkage.Theshrinkageinducedbyphotopolymerizationinfluencestheelectro-opticaI(E-O)propertiesofPDLCssignificantlyc2],andthusitisimportanttomeasureandcontroltheshrinkageaccurately.Inthiswork,polymerdispersedliquidcrystals(PDLCs)with0一10wt%methacrylisobutylpolyhedraloligomericsilsesquioxane(MI-POSS)werepreparedbyphotopolymerizationinducedphaseseparation.Photo-rheologytechniquewasusedtoinvestigatetheeffectofMI-POSSonthevolumeshrinkageofacrylate/liquidcrystalscomposites.TheeffectofMI-POSScontentonthephotoreactionkineticswascharacterizedbyPhoto-differentialscanningcalorimetry(P-DSC).Theseresultsshowedthatphoto-rheologytechniquewascapableofmeasuringphotopolymerizationvolumeshrinkageaccuratelyandeasilyonline,andtheresultsobtainedfromthismethodwerealmostsimilartotheseacquiredfromthedensitymethod,whilepossessingsmallersystematicerrors.MI-POSSreducedthephotopolymerizationvolumeshrinkagefor29%,howevertheconversionofdoublebondwasnotchangedwhenitscontentincreasedfromoto10wt%.
