FireretardancyofWood-PlasticComposites(WPC)isanimportantfactorfortheirinteriorusebecausebothwoodfiberandplasticsareflammable.Inthiswork,thefireretardantpropertiesofwood-plasticcomposites,preparedfromwood-flourandpolypropylene(PP)withmaleicanhydridegraftedPP(PP-g-MAH)asacompatibilizer,nanoclayasafireretardant,wereinvestigated.InordertoobtainingwelldispersednanoclayinPPmatrix,theusednanoclayisamasterbatchcontaining50%organoclaywith25%compatibilizerand25%homoPP.ThenanocompositesstructureswerecharacterizedbyX-raydiffraction(XRD)andTransmissionElectronMicroscopy(TEM).ThecombustionpropertiesofthecompositesweredeterminedbyConecalorimetry(CONE)atanincidentheatfluxof50kW/m2.Thethermalstabilizationofthecompositeswasanalyzedbythermogravimetry(TG).TheresultsofCONEshowedthepeakofheatreleaserateofwoodflour-polypropylenecompositeswasdecreasedfrom407KW/m2to313KW/m2withtheadditionof10%nanoMaxTM-pp,andthemasslossratewasalsoreducedobviously.TGanalysisshowedthatnanoclayhadapositiveeffectonpromotingthethermalstabilizationofthecomposites.Theformationofadditionalcarbonaceouscharwasalsoseeninthewoodflour-PPcompositescontainingnanoclay,indicatingabetterprotectivebarrierwasformed.
