Phenol-formaldehyde(PF)resinusuallycouldnotbeappliedinthehigh-temperatureenvironmentsduetoitspoorheat-resistance.Manykindsofmodificationmethodshadbeenpresentedinordertoimproveitsstabilityofthestructuresandproperties.Inthispaper,boroncarbide(B4C)wasusedasthemodificationadditivestoimprovetheresidueofPFresinafterbeingtreatedathigh-temperatures.Thermalgravity(TG)andscanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM)wereemployedtoinvestigatetheresidueandmicro-structuralevolutionofmodifiedPFresinduringtheheat-treatmentprocess.TGresultsdemonstratedthattheresidueofPFresinwasimprovedeffectivelyduetothesatisfactorymodificationeffectsofB4C.SEMmorphologyshowedthatthedistributionofB4Cpowdersbecamepropertionalattheelevatedtemperatures,andboronoxides(B2O3)wasformedintheinteriorofPFresinmatrix.TheseresultsindicatedthatthereexistedcomplexmodificationreactionsbetweenB4CandvolatilesreleasedfromthedegradationofPFresinathigh-temperatures.Bymeansoftheabovemodificationreactions,somevolatiles,especiallyforCO,convertedintoamorphouscarbonandresultsintheincreasingofresidueafterbeingtreatedathigh-temperatures.
