Animalboneisakindofnaturalbiomaterialwithexcellentfracturestrengthandfracturetoughness,whichcanbeattributedtoitsuniquemicrostructures[l-4].Theobservationofscanningelectronmicroscopeonaconnonboneshowsthattheboneisakindofbioceramiccompositeconsistingofcollagenandhydroxyapatitefibers.Thehydroxyapatitefiberscomposehydroxyapatitelayersandroundthecolumellasoftheboneformingakindofvolute-cellular-fibermicrostructure.Thefracturetoughnessofthebone,whichisrelatedtothemaximalpulloutenergyofthevolute-cellular-fibermicrostructure,isinvestigatedbasedontherepresentativemodelofthemicrostructure.Theinvestigatedresultrevealsthatthemaximumpulloutenergyofthevolute-cellular-fibermicrostructureismarkedlylargerthanthatoftheparallelcellular-fiberone.Itcanalsobefoundthatthemorethecomposite-fiberlayers,thelargerthedifferencebetweenthemaximumpulloutenergyofthevoluteandparallelfiber-cellularmicrostructures.Theanalyticalresultisverifiedbyacomparativeexperimentofthemaximumpulloutenergybetweenthevoluteandtheparallelcellular-fibermicrostructures.
