Inthiswork,plasmageneratedbypulsedradio-frequencyglowdischargeatatmosphericpressurehadbeenappliedtomodifytheultra-high-moduluspolyethylene(UHMPE)fibers.Theinterfacialshearstrength(IFSS)ofplasmatreatedUHMPEwiththematrixepoxyresincompositecuredbytriethylenetetraminewasincreasedby3.2timeswithrespecttotheuntreatedonesforonly5secondstreatment.TheIFSSofthefiberwiththematrixincreasedwiththetreatmenttimeandreachedthemaximumatamoderateflowratioofHe/O2(200:1).Thesurfaceofthetreatedsampleswasexaminedusingscanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM),Fouriertransforminfraredspectra(FTIR)andcapillarytests.Thissimple,fastandenvironmental-friendlyplasmamodificationmethodhasgreatpotentialapplicationsinimprovingtheadhesionofhighperformancefiberswiththeirresinmatrix.
