Dodecyltriphenylphosphoniumand(carbethoxymethyl)triphenyl-phosphoniumbromidewereusedasswellingagentstobeintercalatedintothegalleriesofthemontmorillonitesheetstogettheorganicMMTbyusingcationexchange.TheorganictreatmenteffectsweresystematicallyinvestigatedusingX-raydiffraction(XRD)andFouriertransforminfaredspectrometer(FT-IR).TheresultsshowedthebasalspacingofMMTmodifiedbydodecyltriphenylphosphoniumor(carbethoxymethyl)triphenyl-phosphoniumbromidewasincreased,whichwascontrasttotheNa-MMT.ThesurfacepropertiesofmontmorillonitechangedfromhydrophilictohydrophobicandastronginteractionbetweenorganicMMTandthehydrophobicdispersedyewasformed.TheabsorptioncapacityoforganictreatmentMMTondispersedyeshadanobviouslyincreasecomparedwithNa-MMT.
