Mostpracticalrubbercompoundsarebasedononeormoreelastomers,acuringsystemandreinforcingfillers.Amostfundamentalstepinprocessingrubbercompoundsistheincorporationoffillerintothepolymerbyhigh-shearmixingprocedures,likeinternalmixingortworollmilling.StudebakerandCottonhavedescribedthemixingprocessforcarbonblackfilledrubberintermsofthephases:(1)incorporation,(2)distributionand(3)dispersion.Theincorporationprocessreferstothewettingofthefillerwithrubberandsqueezingoutentrappedair.Duringdistributionanddispersion,thefilleragglomeratesarepulledapartandspreadoutbyrandompatternsofflow.Wettingandencapsulationcontinuetotakeplaceonafinerscale.Manas-Zloczowerandco-workersemphasizedtheimportantroleofaninfiltratedrubberlayerforthecarbonblackdispersionprocess.Thankstotheinfiltratedrubberlayer,thehydrodynamicstresscanbedistributedthroughoutthewholeinfiltratedregionandcanacttoremovefragmentsfromthesurfaceofagglomeratesinsizesuptotheinfiltrationdepth.
