Inabroadspectrumofapplications,elastomermaterialshaveshownthemselvestobeprincipallysuitableforprovidingreliablesealsinengines,transmissionsandhydraulicapplications.Tobesure,thereisagreatdealofuncertaintyinpredictingthefunctionalreliabilityofradialshaftseals–firstlybecausethecompositionoflubricantsformodern-dayengines,hydraulicsystemsandtransmissionsisconstantlyundergoingchangeduetoincreasingrequirementsand,secondly,becausethereishardlyanywell-foundedknowledgeonwearprocessesandontemperaturestressinginthecontactzonecomposedoftheradialsealinglipandtheshaft.Forthatreason,oneoftheobjectivesoftheanalysescarriedoutis–alongsidetheevaluationofindividualmaterial/lubricantcombinations–alsothedeductionofatestprocessforassessingtechnicalapplicability.
