TheEUdirectiveontyreextenderoils[1]hasinitiatedatremendousreformulationworkinthetyreindustrybutalsointheindustrialrubberindustry.Manyoilsuppliershaverevisedtheirproductportfoliotoexcludethecarcinogenicdistillatearomaticextracts(DAE)whichhavebeenusedextensivelyintheproductionoftyresandrubberarticles.Anumberofalternativeshavebeenevaluatedaspossiblereplacement;naphthenicoilsareoneofthem.Naphthenicoilshavebeenusedasrubberextenderoilsformanyyearsbecausetheirsuperiorsolventpowercomparedtoparaffinicoilsishighlyappreciated.Theyareproducedusingthemodernhydrogenationtechnology.Mildextractionsolvates(MES),treateddistillatearomaticxtracts(TDAE)andresidualaromaticextracts(RAE)arethreeotherconsideredalternativesproducedusingthedecliningsolventextractionmethodfromGroupIrefineries].Whilenaphthenicoils,MESandTDAEqualitiesareguaranteedbydefinedproductspecifications,thisisnotthecaseforRAE,whichpropertiescanvarygreatlydependingonsourceaswellasduetoproduction,transportandstorage.Inaddition,thedynamicpropertiesoftyrerubbersextendedwithMESareratherpoor.InthisstudywehavethereforefocusedonSBRtyretreadrubber,comparingtheeffectsofTDAEandanaphthenicoilthatfulfilstheIISRPhigh-viscositynaphthenictyreextenderoilspecification
