Polypropylene(PP)Spun-Meltblown-Spun(SMS)Nonwovens(NWs)arewidelyusedinmedicalandhygieneapplications.PPSMSNWsweremodifiedtoenhancehydrophilicityandantibacterialactivityinthiswork.Inthefirststage,NWswerehydroxylatedbyusingaqueouspotassiumperoxydisulfatesolutionunderastrongflowofnitrogen.Inthesecondstage,thehydroxylatedNWsweresubjectedtograftingofacrylicacidbyusingcerricammoniumnitrateasaninitiator.Subsequently,chitosanwasgraftedontothemodifiedNWswithN,N‘-Methylenebisacrylamide.ThemodifiedNWswerecharacterizedbyXPSspectroscopyandSEM.ItindicatedthatacrylicacidwascopolymerizedandhydrogelwasgraftedontoSMSNWs.HydrogelgraftedNWsexhibitedenhancedwettabilityandwaterabsorptionability.Withthefurtherintroducingofchitosan,themodifiedNWsexhibitedeffectivelyantibacterialactivityagainstE.coli.
