Theglobaldemandforwoodasabuildingmaterialissteadilygrowing,whiletheavailabilityofthisnaturalresourceisdiminishing.Thissituationhasledtothedevelopmentofalternativematerials.Ofthevarioussyntheticmaterialsthathavebeenexploredandadvocated,polymercompositesclaimamajorparticipationasbuildingmaterials.Therehasbeenagrowinginterestinutilizingnaturalfibresasreinforcementinpolymercompositeformakinglowcostconstructionmaterialsinrecentyears.Naturalfibresareprospectivereinforcingmaterialsandtheiruseuntilnowhasbeenmoretraditionalthantechnical.Theyhavelongservedmanyusefulpurposesbuttheapplicationofmaterialtechnologyforutilizationofnaturalfibresasreinforcementinpolymermatrixtookplaceincomparativelyrecentyears.Economicandotherrelatedfactorsinmanydevelopingcountrieswherenaturalfibresareabundant,demandthatscientistsandengineersapplyappropriatetechnologytoutilizethesenaturalfibresaseffectivelyandeconomicallyaspossibletoproducegoodqualityfibrereinforcedpolymercompositesforhousingandotherneeds.Amongthevariousnaturalfibres,sisalisofparticularinterestinthatitscompositeshavehighimpactstrengthbesideshavingmoderatetensileandflexuralpropertiescomparedtootherlignocellulissicfibres.Thepresentpapersurveystheresearchworkpublishedinthefieldofnaturalfibrereinforcedpolymercompositeswithspecialreferencetoprocessingtechniques,interfacemodifications,andfibremicrostructureonthephysicalandmechanicalpropertiesofthecomposites.
