Ioniccomplexformationofvariousprotondonorswithpoly(1,8-octamethyleneacetamidine)insolutionandinthesolidphasewasinvestigatedbyUV/visspectroscopyandDSC.Itcouldbeshownthatduetothestrongbasicityofthepolyamidineadeprotonationoftheprotondonorsoccurred.Incaseofphenolicgroupcontainingchromophoresdeprotonationresultedinasignificantbathochromicshiftofthechromo-phore’slongestwavelengthabsorptionbandbymorethan100nm.Besidetheopticalproperties,thether-malbehaviorofthemixtureswasalsoinfluencedbytheinteractionsbetweenpolymerandprotondonor.Anincreaseoftheglasstransitiontemperatureofthepolymerabout140Kwasattributedtoanionicnetworkformationandmolecularreinforcementeffects.Thecomplexespossessgoodfilmformingprop-ertiesandsufficientlyhighthermalstability.Chromophorescovalentlyboundtothechainendofanaminogroupterminatedpolyether(Jeffamine&reg；)showedasimilarbehavior.Blendsofsuchmodifiedpoly-etherswithpoly(1,8-octamethyleneacetamidine)exhibitedimprovedcompatibility.
